With a total enrollment of over 50,000 students, the University of Central Florida (UCF) is the largest school in Florida and the second largest university in the country. There are multiple UCF campuses across Central Florida, but the vast majority attend classes at the central campus, which is located about 13 miles northeast of downtown Orlando.

The reputation of UCF has been enhanced significantly over the years, and very meaningful research takes place at the university. The university was founded in part to act as research support for the nearby Kennedy Space Center, and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching lists UCF in its “very high research activity” category.

Much easier to get into in the past, UCF is becoming more and more selective as it receives increasing numbers of applications. In fact, their acceptance rate is now lower than that of FSU.

Students at UCF are generally happy with their professors’ performance. There are many excellent fields of study at UCF, particularly the programs in nursing, engineering, sports medicine, psychology, speech disorder and communications.

UCF consistently ranks highly as a good value for your money university. Additionally, its status as a significant up-and-coming institution has been noted among college rankers. The Academic Ranking of World Universities puts UCF in the top 300 universities in the world. The program that UCF ranks highest for is criminology.

For a university so large, it’s not surprising that there are all kinds of students at UCF. However, in general students seem to be laid-back and enjoy having fun. Bring your flip-flops.

Student Life

In addition to all of the activities available in and near Orlando (theme parks, great beaches, etc.), UCF students also have access to Lake Claire for swimming and boating and the UCF Recreation and Wellness Center, a state of the art gym.

The UCF Knights football team competes in NCAA Division I and plays their home games in the new Bright House Networks Stadium. There are both men and women teams for basketball, cross country running, golf, soccer, and tennis. The men only sports at UCF are baseball and football, and the women only sports are rowing, softball and volleyball.
