The first state university, Florida State University, is located on the oldest site of continuous education in Florida. FSU is on the cutting edge of many research developments and is one of two universities recognized as being in the first tier of research universities by the Florida legislature.

At 91%, FSU has one of the highest freshman retention rates in the country, which shows that students are very happy there.

Although FSU is a very large university, it has a more intimate feel than some of the other huge universities in the state like UCF and UF. This could be in part due to the fact that the FSU campus is smaller than those schools which means activities and buildings are closer together

Student Life

Tallahassee is not a large city and people there are pretty friendly. Beaches, though, are not as near as some of the other big schools in Florida. Panama City Beach is about two hours away. However, there is a large fresh water spring located just south of town.

The Seminoles, FSU’s athletic teams, compete in NCAA Division I competition as part of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Their intensely hated rivals are the Florida Gators, and the annual game between the two teams is a much-watched showdown. However, the rivalry with the University of Miami may be even more bitter.

FSU has a reputation as a party school and beer and marijuana is popular at parties.

About 68% of first year students choose to live on campus at FSU.

There are a whopping 550 student organizations at FSU.

The student-run radio station at FSU, WVFS, plays great music and is very well run.

Hopefully you’re a big football fan before deciding to attend FSU, since life there sometimes seems to revolve around their excellent football team (most recently the 2013 national champions).
