Located on the southern tip of the St. Petersburg peninsula, Eckerd College is a well-respected four year liberal arts college. It was described in the book “Colleges that Change Lives” as one of 40 schools that will change the way you think about college for, among other reasons, having a very eco-aware campus.

Eckerd College is best known for its programs in marine science, environmental studies, international relations and global affairs, creative writing, management, study abroad, and civic engagement. The school strives to provide a well-rounded education for all students. Many, 40%, choose to go on to pursue advanced degrees in their field or a related field. Sixty percent of students study abroad at some point at one of the many worldwide Eckerd-affiliated study centers.
Classes are relatively small and active participation is encouraged and in many cases required for a good grade.
Eckerd College has also been noted for its very good and very popular study abroad programs.
Three programs at Eckerd made the 2014 Fiske guide to programs for preprofessionals. Eckerd is one of the small colleges and universities to have programs noted to be strong in business, and they are on the list among all institutions noted to be strong in environmental studies and international studies on the Fiske lists.
Currently under construction is the $25 million Center for Molecular and Life Sciences, which will house the biology, chemistry and biochemistry programs.

Eighty percent of Eckerd students are not from Florida, with most coming from the Northeast.
Students at Eckerd are friendly, approachable and very accepting of non-traditional life-styles. They are also very environmentally-conscious and enjoy partying.
Eckerd’s unique location at the tip of the St. Petersburg peninsula does not only provide an ideal spot for the schools marine science programs, but also for outdoor leisure activities for the students. How many other colleges offer on-campus kayaking? The school provides free use of canoes, kayaks, boats, coolers and tents.
Eckerd College has 11 athletic teams which participate in the Sunshine State Conference (NCAA Division II).
For such a small student body, Eckerd College hosts surprisingly many music theatre and arts events throughout the academic year. Additionally, there are over fifty different clubs and organizations that students can join.
Students at Eckerd are generally pleased with the on-campus and local food. Vegetarians would be happy here.
Most students live on campus and the dorms are hit-and-miss, but the hit ones are very nice with water-front views.
