Originally founded in Michigan in 1988 by Catholic philanthropist and Domino’s Pizza owner and founder Tom Monaghan, Ave Maria University was moved to the town of Ave Maria in Southwest Florida in 2003. It is a private Roman Catholic university with hopes of one day being one of the Catholic Ivies, though there is now much controversy surrounding the university.

Life at Ave Maria University is unlike college life at most other universities. Pornography and sexual relations between unmarried students is banned at Ave Maria University. Dormitories are single gender and members of the opposite sex are not allowed to visit dormitories.
